9 types of Waller balsam - growing and care
Balsam, or Vanka wet, is a popular plant for decorating flower beds and balconies. It is unpretentious, has a long flowering period and a variety of shapes and colors.
At the same time, balsamins are compact, there are varieties that are suitable for long-term cultivation, but more often the plant is cultivated as a flowering annual.
Description of Balsam Waller
Among the many varieties of the plant, it is worth noting the popular Waller balmamine. Originally from East Africa, he differs in photophilous disposition and intolerance to touches, which is why it was called "balsamic touch", because the bush immediately discards the flowers from the slightest touch.
Most often they are cultivated as an annual, but in regions with warm winters it is allowed to grow it as a perennial flowering bush.
Balsam Waller - compact plant up to 60 cm tall with elongated pointed leafy plates of dark green color.
Corolla, depending on the variety, terry or with smooth petals, colors from white to red through orange.
The photo is not able to convey the charm of a flowering balsam: live it is much more beautiful.
Impatiens has become very popular recently, which served as the development of new varieties and hybrids of Waller balsamic variety.
Musica pure white
This is an exceptionally beautiful boiled-white variety with double flowers that look like a rose. The flowering is plentiful, lasts from the beginning of spring to late autumn.
Interesting! Small (up to 2 cm in diameter) flowers completely cover the bush, so that no leaves are visible.
Musica bicolor dark red
It differs in compact size and beautiful pink-like inflorescences. The double color of the variety is interesting - bright red with white spots.
Musica fine purple
The variety is characterized by a well-developed root system and a strong stem. It produces friendly peduncles that open with purple terry corollas of incredible beauty.
Musica red crimson
A rather sprawling bush densely dotted with beautiful bright red flowers. Ideal for growing in flowerpots.
Musica pink energy
Very beautiful balsam with bright pink flowers. Usually it is combined with Musica Pure White to create decorative garden compositions.
Musica orange energy
It is distinguished by developed shoots dotted with orange-red flowers. Perfect for decorating paths and flower beds.
Attention! This variety is very moisture-loving: over-dried soil will cause the inflorescences to dry.
Other popular varieties
For growing in hanging flowerpots, Waller balsamine ampelic varieties of Futura are selected.
Temptation orange is a very interesting hybrid, characterized by a spherical shape and beautiful colors. There is a variety close to it, the Temptation is light pink - its feature in the color of the petals and smaller inflorescences.
A variety of Carnival Cherry Lips also belongs to the hybrid. It is distinguished by its original coloring: the bright crimson middle of the flower is well creamy tips.
Orange fresh is often used to decorate flower beds. Due to the small size of the bush and its spherical shape, it perfectly sets off other plants and can act as a key element in the composition.
The plant is densely strewn with dark orange semi-double flowers with small white rays.
Landing and care
Balsam can be grown for seedlings or sown immediately in open ground. In regions with return frosts, it is recommended to plant already grown seedlings.
In addition, the seedling method will allow plants to bloom earlier and produce flower stalks longer than when planting in open ground.
Given that the touchy has a powerful but superficial root system, the choice of pot is obvious. it not too high wide-necked pot with drainage holes.
Balsam is hygrophilous, but does not tolerate moisture accumulation in the root, so it is important that excess water is freely removed from the pot.
Advice! Experienced flower growers, in order to accelerate flowering, recommend not giving the flower enough space. The closer to the roots, the faster the plant will gain color.
You can also plant several different varieties in one pot - this will add volume to the composition and create an interesting color scheme.
Soil and top dressing
The main requirement for the substrate is must have good gas exchange and be nutritious. In addition, touchy does not like acidified soil. You can buy a ready-made mixture for flowering plants, or you can mix leafy humus with peat and sand in equal proportions.
As a top dressing give preference to potassium phosphorus complexes. They are applied once every 1.5–2 weeks during irrigation.
Important! Balsamine does not tolerate organic fertilizers.
Humidity and watering
Touchy hygroscopic, prefers high humidity, so you need to spray it regularly. But this must be done in the early morning hours, until the sun rises, so as not to cause burns on the leaves.
It is also watered in the morning or in the evening with warm, settled water. It is necessary to water balsam often, but in small portionsso that moisture does not accumulate at the roots.
Basically trim balsam optional. But, in order to maintain a neat shape, especially in spherical varieties, stems that are too long can be shortened when the plant leaves the dormant period.
What is removed:
- stems that go far beyond the crown;
- dried branches;
- stems with signs of the disease.
Attention! Regularly remove dried inflorescences: the procedure stimulates the release of new peduncles.
The touch is decorated with corollas from the end of spring to frost. Flowering does not stop under favorable conditions all this period.
When balsam is grown in an apartment (like a perennial), flowering is extended until mid-January.
But in such cases, in order for the bush to bloom with the vein again, the plant needs to be given time to recover:
- all buds and faded inflorescences are removed from it;
- reduce watering;
- lower temperature;
- put in the shade for about a month.
Fertilizer top dressing
Required you need to feed balsam at rest with mineral complexesintended for flowering plants. But at the time of flowering, the bush needs additional support.
Used for feeding potassium phosphorus compounds that are added during irrigation. You can stick a mineral stick in the pot. These measures are enough to ensure long flowering.
Touchy is growing pretty fast. From the time of germination to the maximum size, only a couple of months pass, and almost immediately the balsam begins to bloom.
In the middle zone and Siberia balsam is cultivated as a garden annual, but in a milder climate or when grown in an apartment, it is impassable for several years and pleases the owner with flowering.
Balsam different delicate pleasant aroma, but in each species the odor intensity and the main note of the aroma will be different.
Not touched vegetatively - cuttings and seed germination.
It is considered an easier way to quickly get a new plant, especially since the stalk is easily rooted and quickly adapts.
From the adult healthy plant with a sharp sterile knife cut off the crown or stem 5-8 cm long and place it in a glass with water. After about 2 weeks, the stalk will give roots, and it is transplanted into an individual pot.
Growing from seeds at home - more laborious method of reproduction. But it is successfully practiced by experienced growers and breeders.
Attention! The collected balsam seeds retain the ability to germinate up to 7 years.
The substrate should be low acid, loose, well allow air to pass to the roots. At the same time, there should not be organic elements in it: balsam does not respond well to such top dressing.
Planting in the seedling box
A layer of drainage of about 2 cm is poured into the prepared wide and not too deep box. Then the soil is added and it is well moistened from the spray gun.
Balsam seeds do not require deep seeding, but you can’t leave them on the surface. It is optimal to place the seeds in holes 1.5–2 cm deep and sprinkle with soil.
Then the box is covered with cling film and placed in a warm, well-lit place. It is not always clear how many seeds germinate, because the rate of emergence of seedlings depends on the characteristics of the variety or hybrid, temperature, irrigation, lighting and the quality of the land. But usually the first shoots are expected in 14 days.
The optimum temperature for germinating seedlings is considered to be 20 ... 23 ° C.
As soon as 2-3 real leaflets appear on the shoots, seedlings dive and planted in individual cupswhere the bushes will develop until they land in the open ground.
This is an obligatory stage in the development of Waller balsam seedling and its strengthening. Harden crops begin even before picking, daily opening a box with seedlings and airing it for 30–45 minutes.
The culture planted in individual cups can be displayed on the balcony, keeping there for half an hour or an hour.
When growing balsam in the conditions of his apartment need to be transplanted periodically. Do this as soon as the pot becomes small. But to increase the size of the pot is not much: in a cramped pot of untouched flowers blooms more abundantly.
Impatiens blooms profusely and annually. To stimulate the appearance of buds, it is not recommended to transplant a flower often: in a tight container, balsam produces more peduncles.
Balsam can not be fertilized with organic fertilizers - this will discard the color. It is better to use mineral complexes for flowering plants.
Balsam is unpretentious, but the owner may encounter some difficulties. Here are some of them:
- The stems become brown, the leaves are curled. A possible cause is excess moisture and cold.
- Dry and twisted sheet plates. Most likely, it is too hot, the air is dry, and the plant does not have enough moisture.
- No flowers. Not enough nutrients or light.
- Plant dropped flowers. The likely cause is a sharp cooling.
Balsam is a very beautiful plant that able to decorate both the flowerbed in the garden and the window sill in the house. A variety of shapes and colors allows you to choose the touchy to your liking.
