How to care for dracaena at home?
In the Asparagus family there is a genus that has representatives of succulent trees or shrubs. The genus of Dracaena came to us from Africa, some of its species are from South Asia, and one even from Central America.
From these geographical latitudes, the legend of a warrior who loved the leader’s daughter came to us. The chief father was against their union. The stern father stuck a stick in the ground, ordered the young man to water it. The leader gave only five days for the appearance of leaves. Love is strong, after five days the leaves appeared, the tree grew dracenic. The wedding was. Drazen was called the "tree of happiness."
Dracaena is translated as “female dragon”, “dragon” or “dragon tree”. Tree forms of dracaena can be found in many gardeners in the collection. Dracaena is often called the “false palm” and is sometimes confused with cordilina, as it was previously part of the Cardilin family. In fact, dracaena and not palm, and not cordilina, isolated in its own genus Drazenovye.
Non-branched stems give out young dracaena, which densely cover sessile leathery leaves of different widths and lengths. They come in various colors: white, pink, yellow, green, colorful or with longitudinal stripes.
The adult dracaena has an already bare and woody trunk. The leaves of some dracaena are collected in a bunch at the top, while others curl in a spiral along the stem or whorled.
Dracaena growth is slow, but at the same time they are long-livers. The roots are club-shaped yellow-red on the cut, there are no branches and shoots.
Flowering at home does not occur. In nature, pinkish or white flowers are collected in fragrant panicles.
Dracaena is not very whimsical in its care. It can decorate any interior with its exotic forms and colors, being alone and in composition with other plants: a hall, a shopping center, a winter garden, an office.
Different classifiers give different quantitative indicators of dracaena species: from 40 to 300 species.
The most common types of dracaena: marginata or fringed, fragrant and compact, Godsef, dragon, derema, reflex or bent.
All types of dracaena look exotic and respectable.
Lighting and temperature
All bright and colorful dracaena need bright lighting in order to keep the pattern on the sheet plates.
If dracaena simply has green leaves, then it will feel good in diffused lighting.
The south and west windows are perfect for dracaena. In winter they have it closer to the window, in the summer a little further.
In summer, dracaena loves heat up to 25 ° C, in winter it is comfortable not lower than 15 ° C.
Dracaena is a relatively hardy houseplant. Even fresh air is well tolerated on the loggia, balcony, only drafts should be excluded.
Watering and humidity
Waterlogging, as well as drought in a pot for dracaena, are not permissible. It is important to maintain uniformity in watering. Before each watering, experienced growers recommend loosening the soil. Drying tips signal that there is not enough water, especially if there are heating appliances nearby.
The lower the temperature, the less often the dracaena is watered, and the upper soil layer is more often loosened.
Indoor air must be kept moist and warm. Daily spraying with warm water regulates the condition of the leaves of dracaena.
The water is taken soft, filtered.
A warm shower for dracaena can be arranged regularly, only a pot of earth is placed in a bag so as not to over-moisten the earthen coma.
Every two weeks during the period of active growth, the dracaena is fertilized, supported by a complex special composition for green houseplants. Suitable liquid and granular complex.
During dormant feeding is not required.
Transplanting, pruning and reproduction
Dracaena grows slowly, transplants are rare. In the spring, once every two years.
In a pot at the bottom, drainage is laid to a third of the height. Then lay the ground (turf, humus, leafy land) with peat and sand. It is good to take ready soil for palm trees.
An approximate ratio for choosing a container: a plant 40 cm high requires a pot 15 cm in diameter.
It so happens that dracaena extends upward and leaves are located on the crown of the head with a bunch. The view is not very presentable. Solution: cropping. Cut the tip of the right size, leave the stalk in the pot of the right height, and as a result we have two plants. The remains of the stem are sealed with paraffin, cuttings of cuttings are covered with powdered charcoal. This is also one of the methods of propagation of dracaena, apical cuttings.
From the stem with the roots in the pot, new buds and leaves will very quickly appear.
Another method of propagation by stem cuttings, on which two buds are left. They are processed and placed in a soil substrate.
A bag of moist peat is tied to the air layers at the notch, after the roots appear it is cut from the main stem and transplanted into a separate pot.
To dracaena could gather strength, cut leaf blades by one third.
Very rarely, Dracaena is bred with seeds. They are first soaked in a growth stimulator for a day and can withstand temperatures of 30ºC. Take soil for palm trees and put seeds there, organize a mini-greenhouse. In a couple of months, the first sprouts will appear.
Sprouts of 5-6 cm can be transplanted into separate containers.
Diseases and Pests
- Subject to all the recommended watering, lighting and temperature regimes, dracaena will not get sick.
- If they are disturbed, problems arise: the leaves turn yellow and dry, burns appear on the leaves, the leaves fall off young before two years, the roots rot.
Pests: scale insect, spider mite, mealybug, thrips, aphids.
