Eranthemum (Eranthemum) is a plant of the Acanthus family. In nature, it grows in southeast Asia, India. The name comes from two Greek words: erranos (favorite) and anthos (flower).
Features of individual species
The genus includes 30 species, but in room culture, mainly used:
pretty erantemum (pulchellum);
Erantemum Watt (wattii).
Beautiful Erantemum - a highly branching shrub. Leaves are ovoid, rough, pointed ends. Spiky flowers are collected at the tops of the shoots. They gradually change their color from pink to purple. The height of the plant is about one meter.
The Erantemum Watta is a shrub that differs from the beautiful Erantemum by large white bracts.
Erantemum is a tropical plant, but grows well at home. To create optimal conditions it is necessary:
- maintain ambient temperature within 20-24 degrees;
- periodically spray the flower from the spray gun and put the pot on wet expanded clay;
- protect the plant from direct sunlight.
When the content of erantemum must take into account its features:
- regular pruning is necessary to form a beautiful bush;
- this plant is a short day and for lush flowering it is necessary to artificially change the duration of daylight hours in autumn;
- with a lack of lighting, the lower part of the stem is quickly exposed.
Transplant and substrate
It is necessary to transplant the plant every year - in the spring. The soil for planting should be loose and fertile. It’s better to make the mixture yourself. You will need the following ingredients in equal parts:
- turf land;
- sheet earth;
- sand or perlite;
Good drainage is needed at the bottom.
Erantemums like bright diffused lighting. Therefore, it is better to put the pot on the east or west window.
These plants are thermophilic, but an increase in ambient temperature above +25 degrees inhibits erantemums. In winter, a cooler content is needed - + 16-18 ° C.
Watering and feeding
Erantemums are plants of the tropics, so the soil in the summer should be constantly moist. In winter, moderate watering - not more than once a week.
In summer, constant fertilizing with mineral fertilizers with a high potassium content is necessary. It responds well to the addition of organic matter to the soil. In winter, the plant is not fed.
Erantemums are propagated by green apical cuttings.
It is better to cut the cuttings in the spring. They are rooted in a mixture of wet peat and sand, using root stimulants. It is better to grow young plants in a greenhouse at + 23-28 ° С.
Mostly on a erantemum, a spider mite and a mealybug love to settle. For protection, it is better to use biological products.
With massive leaf fall, it is better to dry the earthen lump.
Erantemums deserve the attention of flower growers, but it is necessary to constantly maintain the required humidity of the surrounding air.
